Forget
the festival, forget the bird, the town of Woodstock, is
the hippest of them all! Encouraging individuality, Woodstock
was a large artists' colony years before the famous 1969 same-named
concert, held in a field 50 miles away.
Browse the shops and eclectic emporiums on Tinker St., visit the
art galleries, tour the museum and bike around town. Scenic vistas
and babbling brooks meet you around every corner. Take a dip in
the Tannery Brook swimming hole or sit back and enjoy the people
watching.
For some reason we expected to see flower children roaming the
streets. Surprisingly, we noticed a pretty diverse crowd. Of course
the Jerry Garcia, Yoko Ono, and John Lennon look-alikes dot the
landscape, but we also noticed people from every walk of life
browsing the shops and galleries. I guess Woodstock truly does
bring all people together. Groovy, man!

The
town green on Tinker St. is always bustling with activity.
Throughout the year, Woodstock puts on festivals, flea markets,
and fairs.
For more local info, stop in to the Chamber of Commerce,
catty corner from the town green on Rock City Rd. Pam will
point you in the right direction from here.
There are a number of art galleries to visit on Tinker St.
like the Gallery BMG (above), the Center for Photography
at Woodstock. Also, The Woodstock Artist's Association,
a historic landmark adjacent to the green, offers ongoing
exhibitions. On weekends, visit the Woodstock Museum,
over the bridge and up the street.
Perched next to the Tannery Brook Bridge, is Tinker Village—a
series of shops to peruse for pottery and jewelry. Catch
an excellent view of the brook from the other side at the
Treasure Chest (pictured left).
There is a myriad of eclectic shops to browse on Tinker
St.
Past the bridge, and museum youll find Overlook
Mountain Bikes. Theyll rent you a traditional
or mountain bike for the day, provide maps and suggest routes.
Of course this beautiful area is prime for hiking too!

LODGING
|
 |
Pictured
left is the
Woodstock
Inn on the Millstream, just a few blocks
from the town green. A beautiful stream runs through this
ranch-style property just yards away from the rooms. Enjoy
the view from every room or jump right in the swimming hole!
Rooms are pleasant and start at $119 per night. The very
charming Twin Gables Inn on Tinker St. is quite reasonable
too. Also try the beautiful Wild Rose Inn just down
the street on Rock City Rd. For private, comfortable lodging
in a peaceful stream-side garden setting, try the studios
and log cabin at Getaway-on-the-Falls
in the center of Woodstock.
And not far from Woodstock, the
Howard Johnson Saugerties offers 84
rooms, an indoor pool, and free wireless access. For more
personalized accomodations, Saugerties is also home to the
Barclay
Heights Bed and Breakfast, an elegant Victorian
cottage that combines classic furnishings and with up-to-the-minute
conveniences. (The Barclay Heights' "Long Weekend"
and "Tour Hudson Valley" packages make for affordable,
all-in-one ways to spend some time in this area.)

DINING
|
 |
For fine
Mediterranean cuisine, Joshuas Café is
the place to go. We ate at Taco Juans and had
a great inexpensive spicy Mexican lunch. The beef burritos
are fantastic!
Locals also praise Bread Alone.
