Maine may be best known for its lobsters, lighthouses, bed &
breakfasts, and magnificent coastline... but equally alluring, if less traveled,
is the Kennebec County and Moose River Valley Region, featuring lakes and
rivers, mountains, and abundant wildlife, including moose. This inland bed and breakfast
destination presents a wide range of experiences for outdoor enthusiasts, families,
and leisure travelers in all four seasons.
Augusta is where the State's colorful history can be discovered at the Maine State
Museum, Old Fort Western, and the State Capitol. Just to the north is Waterville,
home of Colby College and its world-class art museum. The region follows Rt. 201
and the Kennebec River to Skowhegan, home of the Margaret Chase Smith Library Center,
filled with photos and memorabilia from the late Senator's illustrious past.
To the north is the nationally-designated Old Canada Road Scenic Byway, from Solon
to the Canadian border, and its outstanding views of the river, lakes and mountains.
Along the way is the town of The Forks, a center for whitewater rafting; this northern
area (from Bingham to Jackman) is also a snowmobiling mecca during the winter months.
